The power of repetition

Songs you like or are trying to learn on repeat like 20 times? It’s a habit shared by many, especially neurodivergent individuals! That hyperfocus is a language-learning superpower; use it!

Repetition, especially through music, can dramatically enhance your ability to absorb a new language, while you are having fun. And who doesn't like to sing a new song every once in a while? ☺️

Language acquisition through song

When you listen to a song on loop, you’re not just enjoying the melody; you’re also immersing yourself in the lyrics. This helps you pick up vocabulary, pronunciation, and even grammar in a more organic way.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to make the most out of your musical language lessons:

  • Choose a Song:

Pick a song in the language you want to learn that you like. Make sure it has clear lyrics and a catchy melody.

  • Listen Actively:

Start by just listening. Focus on catching the words and phrases, even if you don’t understand them all at first.

  • Follow Along With Lyrics:

Find the lyrics and read along as you listen. This helps you connect sounds with words.

  • Sing Along:

Once you feel comfortable, start singing along. This practice improves your pronunciation and helps reinforce the words in your memory. You will also realize just how fast the song is in most cases!

  • Repeat!

Don’t be afraid to listen to the same song multiple times. Each repeat deepens your understanding and retention.

At this stage you can also look up the translation of the lyrics: you might be surprised at the meaning ☺️

Why music?

First, the rhythm of songs makes it easier to remember words. Techniques such as rhyme and melody can create a memorable learning experience that traditional studying simply can’t match.

Furthermore, music is emotive. Singing a song that you like will you enhance your emotional engagement with the language. Also, for kinesthetic learners (people who learn best through physical activity): dancing along to the song will help you memorize it better!

Neurodivergent learners often find their own way to learn. Many learn languages through songs, TV, or gaming.
